Mozilla has launched a brand new service called Firefox Send. With Firefox Send, you can send files up to 2.5GB (1GB without an account). The key advantage is that all links are temporary, so, the files will be inaccessible after they cross the specified number of days or downloads. On top of that, all uploaded files are end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that no third parties are able to access the files.
Even though the service carries the Firefox brand name, it is accessible from any web browser. So, even if you are a Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Opera user, you can make full use of Firefox Send’s features.
Without logging in, you can upload and share files up to 1GB. However, you will need to sign-in into a Firefox account to take most of the advantages of Firefox Send. Uploads by unregistered users will expire after 1 download with a maximum link life of 1 day. That can serve the purpose for a lot of users doing quick and single-use file sharing. All users are able to set a password to further secure the files from being downloaded by an unauthorized user.
Your benefits increase multiple times if you log in to a Firefox account (which is free). Logged in users can upload files as big as 2.5GB. They can also customize the link expiry from several possible values. Mozilla offers the following expiry options for the number of downloads: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 20, 50 and100. Similarly, Mozilla offers the following expiry options for the number of days: 5 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, and 7 days.
That means the current upper limits for Firefox Send is:
- 2.5GB of file size
- Maximum 100 downloads before the link expires
- Maximum 7 days before the link expires
The receiver’s interface:
The receivers of the link will get a clean and tidy interface without any fuss. They will be informed that the file is end-to-end encrypted with a big download link.
Firefox Send is an appealing service, however, I hope it does not end up being in the trash can after a while as a lot of Mozilla’s projects these days. You can start using Firefox send by launching their website.
