Jolla, the company behind the development of Sailfish OS has announced a new major OS release. Version 3.4.0 of Sailfish OS brings a large number of under-the-hood changes and improvements, however not much has changed visually. The 3.4.0.22 build of Sailfish OS started seeding to early-access subscribers on 29th September.
As seen in the past, a good number of OS’s improvements have once again come from Russia’s OMP which develops a Sailfish OS port called Aurora OS. It is good for the development and future of Sailfish OS as well as the users using the OS (mostly under the Sailfish X program).
Sailfish OS 3.4.0 is named after Pallas-Yllästunturi – the 3rd largest national park in Finland. Users upgrading from 3.3.0 to 3.4.0 will see a download between 440MB to 680MB depending on their device. The latest release brings improvements & fixes in several areas of the OS and system apps, including:
- Accounts
- Android App support
- Backup and Restore
- Bluetooth
- Browser
- Calculator
- Camera
- Calendar
- Cloud Storage
- Connectivity
- Device Lock
- Documents
- Gallery
- Home screen
- Localization
- Messages
- Notes
- Notifications
- People
- Phone
- Security
- Settings
- Storage & File Manager
- Text input
- User accounts
- USB/MTP
- VPN
- Weather
That’s quite a lot of work, especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns. You can head to the Sailfish OS forums to read the full release notes. And in case you are interested in a detailed changelog, you should head to this post at Sailfish OS forums.
