HMD Global’s Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 are finally receiving the upgrade to Android 11. The long-due update was supposed to be delivered before the end of Q3 of 2021 but got delayed for reasons only known to hmd. Sadly this means the device that was supposed to be “up to date” will remain “out of date” because they are getting Android 11 when Android 12 is already out.
Several users at Nokia Community forums started noticing the update earlier today. The update is not yet available globally. Per the users at the Nokia Community, the update is available in Greece and Vietnam at least. The update for Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 is identical with the build V3.440 weighing over 1.46GB. Android 11 update brings along the usual stuff that one can expect from Android 11. This includes a better control at the Notifications, a native app for screen recording, bubbles for chat apps; and some under the hood changes. There’s also the Android security patch for the month of October 2021.
Android 11 update notification on Nokia 7.2 (in greek)
One thing hmd has upgraded with Android 11 is the bootloader’s security version. That means at present we will not be able to downgrade the Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 from Android 11 to Android 10 or 9 for bootloader unlock purposes. That said, if you have already unlocked the bootloader then it will remain unlocked.
Manually install the update from recovery mode
If you are from a region where the update is not yet available, then you can install the update manually from the recovery mode. This has been made possible with the help of Vicente who captured the OTA update URL. Follow the steps below to do a manual install.
Note: Manually installing the update to an unsupported region might cause issues in receiving OTA upgrades in the future. There is a small chance of that, so, proceed at your own risk.
- Download the update file from the following on your computer.
Download for Nokia 7.2 – Global variant | Indian variant (ddva_sprout)
Download for Nokia 6.2 – Global variant - Restart your Nokia 7.2 or Nokia 6.2 to recovery mode.
If you have USB Debugging enabled, you can do so by sending the command:adb reboot recovery
- Select “Apply update from ADB” in the recovery menu.
- Connect the phone to the computer. Then send the update file to the phone by using the following command:
adb sideload <drag and drop the file>
- Wait for the sideload to finish.
- Restart the phone and enjoy Android 11 upgrade.
Do let us know about your experience with Android 11 on your Nokia smartphone. One of the positive changes I have noticed is that the notifications can be accessed by swiping down on the home screen.
