The details:
The Nokia 8.3 is the successor to the Nokia 8.1. It should have been named the Nokia 8.2, but it has skipped that number to match up with the Nokia 1.3 and the Nokia 5.3.
Nokia 8.3 is built from a glass-sandwich design with an aluminum mid-frame. The aluminum gives it the structural integrity while the glass delivers the premium and sleek feel that we expect from a premium smartphone. Even though it uses glass, the Nokia 8.3 5G does not offer wireless charging.
Front design and specs
The front of the Nokia 8.3 5G features a 6.81-inch Full HD display. There is a circular cutout on the left side of the display for the front-facing 24MP camera. The remainder of the front is essentially all-screen, except for the unexpected chin. The chin flaunts the Nokia branding and probably gives a little better grip.
Nokia uses the already known PureDisplay technology in collaboration with PixelWorks. PureDisplay offers real-time upscaling of regular definition content to HDR. So, even if you’re watching content that is not recorded in HDR, you’ll get a feel of HDR.
Back design and cameras
The backside is where the quad-camera setup mounted inside the circular camera decoration resides. There are 4 different camera sensors, each taking care of a special photography choice. Nokia 8.3 offers a dedicated macro, depth and wide-angle sensor apart from the 64MP primary sensor. Nokia 8.3 5G also features PureView branding, which has traditionally been reserved for smartphones with great camera capabilities. Apart from that, the Nokia 8.3 5G offers Nokia’s OZO audio recording and playback capabilities.
Nokia 8.3 also includes the exclusive ZEISS cinematic effects. The device will automatically enhance the videos by adding the blue flares automatically.
Side design and specs
Taking a look at the sides of the device, the Nokia 8.3 features the usual 3 physical keys on the right and an additional Google Assistant key on the left side of the phone. What’s unique is that this time the fingerprint scanner is integrated into the power button. So, the single key serves 2 purposes. The physical fingerprint reader is a welcome addition since the under-display tech still doesn’t perform as good as a physical reader does. The left side also features the SIM tray for which both single SIM and dual SIM options will be available. The smartphone also offers the room to insert a MicroSD card to expand the storage.
On the bottom side, you will also find the 3.5mm headphone jack which is slowly becoming extinct from modern smartphones. The bottom also features the USB Type-C port for data transfers and charging.
CPU and Connectivity
The Nokia 8.3 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G modular platform. The CPU offers an integrated 5G modem to provide access to the newest 5G network, while also being good on the battery backup. It is worth noting that Nokia 8.3 does not offer 2G/3G connectivity. It only supports 4G and the futuristic 5G connectivity.
Storage, RAM, and battery
Nokia 8.3 5G comes in 2 storage and memory configuration. The 128GB variant offers 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM while the 64GB variant offers 6GB of RAM. A 4500mAh battery will offer the juice which should be enough to last a day in most of the use cases.
Software and updates
Nokia 8.3 5G features the same long-term software support from Nokia as we have seen on their previous phones. Powered by Android One, the Nokia 8.3 comes with Android 10 out of the box. And the smartphone will get regular Android OS and security updates for up to 3 years. That is 2 years of core Android OS updates and 3 years of month Android security patches.
Android One also ensures that you will get a clean bloatware-free experience without any ads or unwanted apps. However, it also lacks essential features that you might have used in your previous phone. Android One smartphones do not include any additional features other than what Google makes for the Android platform.
Price & availability
Nokia 8.3 5G will be available for purchase sometime in summer 2020. Exact availability will be shared at a later point. The smartphone will retail for an approximate global average price of EUR 599. The region-wise prices are not announced. Hence, we are only using a direct currency conversion which might not provide the real picture.
- Europe: 599 Euros
- India: Rs. 48,000
- USA: $638 USD
The price may be right for the combination of 5G and Nokia’s brand image. However, the lack of a cheaper 4G variant leaves a too big of a gap in the HMD’s portfolio. There’s no device to cover the price segment between the Nokia 7.2 and the Nokia 8.3 except for the Nokia 9, which is way too old to be a recommendation in 2020.
